Mining and Smithing go hand-in-hand when training - especially as an Ultimate Ironman since you can't bank nor can you trade with others.
BRONZE
Set inventory to have an even number of free spaces. If you can't afford to get rid of something, add a hammer to your inventory to even out the spaces.
Mine an equal number of copper and tin. I usually use the mine located to the South-East of Varrock.
When your inventory is full, you need to use a furnace to smelt the ore into bars of metal.
The two closest options for you to use:
Home teleport to Lumbridge and use the furnace North of the castle.
Walk south of the mine mentioned above and use the furnace in Al Karid.
After smelting the bars, purchase a hammer if you do not already have one (or kill goblins East of Lumbridge castle until they drop one).
Use the bars on an anvil to make weapons or armour. I made lots of bronze swords at first (since they only use one bar and sell for a higher price per bar used at the sword shop in Varrock than longswords and daggers).
IRON
Repeat the same steps as mentioned above for bronze, but you don't have to worry about having an even number of inventory spaces for ore.
**HINT: Once you have 10 Mining, 15 Smithing, and 10 Cooking you can do The Knight's Sword quest and get 12,275 Smithing experience. Finishing this quest when you have 15 Smithing will bring you to level 31! This would allow you to skip iron and go to steel (provided you can mine coal, which requires 30 Mining).
STEEL
Steel bars require two coal and one iron ore to make a steel bar. Free up inventory space to have a number of free spaces that is evenly divisable by three (or you can just mine an extra iron ore or two) to fill your inventory.
The best place to mine coal would be in the Dwarven mines under Falador.
There is a furnace in Falador you can use to smelt the ore into bars
Two close locations for anvils:
North of Falador available for use if you've completed Doric's quest
Inside the Dwarven Mine
Mining here is great since everything is relatively close. Making shields is a great option as there is a sheild shop in Falador where you can sell them.
